Target Information
AXL is a chronic myelogenous leukemia-associated oncogene linked to colon cancer and melanoma. The AXL protein is a receptor tyrosine kinase that transduces extracellular matrix signals into the cytoplasm by binding growth factors such as vitamin K-dependent protein GAS6, promoting cell proliferation.
TAM receptors are involved in phagocytosis of apoptotic cells. Mice lacking all three TAM receptors exhibit degenerative and autoimmune phenotypes similar to systemic lupus erythematosus.
Axl may also function as an entry receptor for filoviruses and serves as a marker for Siglec 6+/Axl+ human dendritic cells. Expression of Axl can be upregulated by TLR ligands (e.g., LPS, poly I:C). Soluble Axl, generated by proteolytic cleavage, may indicate inflammation and cancer.
