Target Information
CD1a is a non-polymorphic MHC Class I-related cell surface glycoprotein expressed in association with Beta 2 microglobulin. It is found on cortical thymocytes, Langerhans cells, and interdigitating cells, as well as in certain T-cell malignancies and histiocytosis X. CD1a mediates presentation of lipid and glycolipid antigens to T cells and forms heterodimers with beta-2-microglobulin. The CD1 family (CD1a–e) genes are located on chromosome 1 and differ in localization and lipid ligand specificity. CD1a localizes to the plasma membrane and early endocytic vesicles. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been observed but their biological validity remains undetermined.
