Target Information
The MT-ATP6 gene encodes a protein essential for normal mitochondrial function. Mitochondria convert energy from food into a usable form for cells through oxidative phosphorylation, producing ATP (adenosine triphosphate).
MT-ATP6 forms part of the ATP synthase enzyme complex (complex V), responsible for the final step of oxidative phosphorylation. One segment of ATP synthase enables proton flow across the mitochondrial membrane, while another uses this energy to convert ADP (adenosine diphosphate) into ATP.
