Target Information

Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in mitochondrial protein synthesis.
Mitochondrial ribosomes consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed.
Mammalian mitoribosomes lack 5S rRNA and their protein components vary significantly across species, making sequence-based identification difficult.
The MRPL24 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein that is more than twice the size of its E. coli counterpart. Sequence analysis identified two transcript variants encoding the same protein.
