Background
This gene encodes a single-pass type II membrane protein that belongs to the peptidase S9B family of serine proteases. Although it lacks protease activity due to the absence of a conserved serine residue, it binds specific voltage-gated potassium channels and modulates their expression and biophysical properties. Variations in this gene may be linked to susceptibility to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and idiopathic ventricular fibrillation. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
