Target Information
Protein kinase C (PKC) is a family of serine- and threonine-specific protein kinases activated by calcium and diacylglycerol. PKC family members phosphorylate diverse protein targets and participate in multiple cellular signaling pathways. They act as receptors for phorbol esters, which are tumor promoters. Each PKC isoform has distinct expression and cellular roles, including B cell activation, apoptosis, endothelial proliferation, and intestinal sugar absorption. Mouse studies suggest roles in neuronal regulation and stress-related behavior. Alternative splicing generates multiple isoforms.
