Target Information

Adducins are heteromeric proteins composed of alpha, beta, and gamma subunits. These subunits form part of the membrane skeletal proteins that organize the spectrin-actin network in erythrocytes and epithelial cell junctions.

• Alpha and gamma adducins are ubiquitously expressed, while beta adducin is mainly found in brain and hematopoietic tissues.
• Adducin is a heterodimer of alpha and beta subunits purified from human erythrocytes.
• Polymorphisms in these subunits have been linked to blood pressure regulation in hypertension models.
• Each subunit has two domains: a protease-resistant globular N-terminal region and a protease-sensitive C-terminal region containing phosphorylation sites for protein kinase C, a calmodulin-binding site, and regions for spectrin and actin association.
• Various alternatively spliced beta adducin mRNAs encode different isoforms, whose functions are not yet fully understood.
