Target Information

Adducins are heteromeric proteins composed of distinct subunits (alpha, beta, gamma) that form part of the membrane skeletal network. They are involved in the assembly of the spectrin–actin network in erythrocytes and at epithelial cell junctions.

• Expression pattern: Alpha and gamma are ubiquitous; beta is restricted to brain and hematopoietic tissues.
• Functional characteristics: The amino-terminal domain is globular and protease resistant, while the carboxy-terminal domain is protease sensitive and contains phosphorylation sites for protein kinase C, a calmodulin-binding site, and regions required for spectrin and actin association.
• Clinical relevance: Polymorphisms in alpha and beta adducins are associated with blood pressure regulation in hypertension models.
• Isoforms: Multiple alternatively spliced beta-adducin mRNAs exist, though their functions are not fully characterized.
