Human growth hormone (hGH) belongs to the somatotropin/prolactin family, crucial for growth regulation. The GH1 gene and related genes are located on chromosome 17 and share high sequence identity.
Alternative splicing yields five isoforms (19–24 kDa). hGH is secreted by pituitary somatotroph cells and acts via cytokine receptor family membrane receptors.
Its key functions include:
