Target Information
Calcitonin is a 32 amino acid peptide found in C cells of the normal and hyperplastic thyroid. Staining for calcitonin aids in identifying C cell proliferative abnormalities ranging from hyperplasia to invasive tumors. In medullary carcinoma of the thyroid, calcitonin staining shows a fine granular cytoplasmic pattern, and amyloid deposits within the tumor may also exhibit varying degrees of calcitonin activity.
