Target Information
Gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP) regulates numerous functions of the gastrointestinal and central nervous systems, including release of gastrointestinal hormones, smooth muscle contraction, and epithelial cell proliferation. GRP acts as a potent mitogen for neoplastic tissues. Its effects are mediated through the gastrin-releasing peptide receptor (BB2), a glycosylated, 7-transmembrane G-protein coupled receptor that activates the phospholipase C signaling pathway.
Aberrant expression of this receptor has been observed in cancers such as lung, colon, and prostate. A balanced translocation involving chromosome 8 and X within the GRP receptor gene has been reported in an individual with autism and multiple exostoses.
