Gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP)는 위장관 및 중추신경계의 다양한 기능을 조절하며, 위장 호르몬 분비, 평활근 수축, 상피세포 증식 등에 관여합니다. GRP의 작용은 gastrin-releasing peptide receptor(GRPR)를 통해 매개되며, 이 수용체는 7-transmembrane G-protein coupled receptor로 phospholipase C 신호 경로를 활성화합니다. GRPR은 폐, 결장, 전립선 등 여러 암 조직에서 비정상적으로 발현됩니다. 또한 자폐증 및 다발성 골외골종을 가진 개인에게서 GRPR 유전자 내 염색체 전위가 보고된 바 있습니다.
