Target Information
CD81 (TAPA-1, target of anti-proliferative antibody-1) is a member of the tetraspanin family, expressed on most nucleated cells, particularly germinal center B cells.
It forms complexes with other tetraspanins, integrins, coreceptors, and MHC molecules, influencing adhesion, morphology, activation, proliferation, and differentiation of B and T cells.
In muscle tissue, CD81 promotes cell fusion and myotube maintenance.
It also acts as a receptor for the hepatitis C virus.
CD81 associates with CD19, CD21, Leu 13, and integrins on the cell membrane and has anti-proliferative effects on certain lymphoid cell lines.
Located in the tumor-suppressor gene region, CD81 is a candidate gene for malignancies.
