Specificity Comments:
The protein encoded by this gene is a transcriptional activator involved in sex determination. It binds DNA as a monomer. Defects in this gene are associated with XY sex reversal and adrenal failure. SF-1 is an orphan nuclear receptor regulating steroidogenic enzyme gene expression. It is expressed in steroidogenic tissues such as adrenal cortex, testicular Sertoli and Leydig cells, ovarian theca, hypothalamus, and anterior pituitary. SF-1 is a key marker for determining adrenocortical origin of adrenal masses.

Target Information

Steroidogenic factor-1 (SF-1) is an orphan nuclear receptor essential for development and differentiation of endocrine organs including the hypothalamus, pituitary, gonads, and adrenal glands. It promotes transcriptional activity of steroidogenic enzymes from the cytochrome P450 family. SF-1 contains two activation domains (AF1 and AF2), which interact with nuclear receptors and coactivators such as SRC-1, GRIP1, CREB binding protein (CBP), and SMRT.
