Target Information

Cluster of differentiation 8 (CD8) is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin receptor family, essential in signal transduction and T cell differentiation and activation. CD8 is mainly expressed on T cells as a disulfide-linked heterodimer of CD8α and CD8β, functioning as a co-receptor with the T cell receptor (TCR) for MHC class I molecules, while CD4 serves as the co-receptor for MHC class II.
CD8α is critical for MHC-I binding and is also found as a homodimer on subsets of T cells, NK cells, monocytes, and dendritic cells. Interaction with MHC-I/peptide complexes on antigen-presenting cells recruits the kinase Lck, leading to lymphokine production, motility, and cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) activation. Activated CTLs play a key role in eliminating pathogens and tumor cells. Differentiation of naive CD8+ T cells into CTLs is enhanced by IL-2, IL-12, and TGF-β1.
