Product Specific Information

This antibody detects a 180 kDa protein corresponding to the molecular mass of Integrin alphaL on SDS-PAGE immunoblots of human Jurkat cells.

Target Information

CD11a (LFA-1 alpha, ITGAL) together with CD18 constitute leukocyte function-associated antigen 1 (LFA-1), the alphaLbeta2 integrin.
CD11a is implicated in activation of the LFA-1 complex and plays a central role in leukocyte intercellular adhesion through interactions with ICAMs 1–3.
It functions in lymphocyte costimulatory signaling and is expressed on the plasma membrane of leukocytes in a low-affinity conformation.
Upon stimulation by chemokines or other signals, CD11a shifts to a high-affinity conformation, enabling tight binding to ICAM ligands.
CD11a is involved in immune cell interactions, tissue-specific settlement, and regulation of cell differentiation, proliferation, and T-cell effector functions.

Blocking CD11a function using antibodies or small molecules is an important therapeutic approach for inflammatory diseases.
For example, Efalizumab (Raptiva) interferes with T-cell migration to inflammation sites, and simvastatin binding to the CD11a allosteric site leads to immunomodulation and increased lymphocytic cholinergic activity.

Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms of CD11a have been identified.
Diseases associated with CD11a dysfunction include benign cephalic histiocytosis and leukocyte adhesion deficiency.
