Target Information
Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) regulates cell growth, motility, and morphogenesis through activation of a tyrosine kinase signaling cascade after binding to the c-Met receptor. Secreted by mesenchymal cells, HGF acts as a multifunctional cytokine mainly on epithelial cells. It stimulates mitogenesis, cell motility, and matrix invasion, playing a key role in angiogenesis, tumorigenesis, and tissue regeneration.
HGF is secreted as an inactive single polypeptide and cleaved by serine proteases into a 69-kDa alpha-chain and a 34-kDa beta-chain, forming an active heterodimer via a disulfide bond. It belongs to the plasminogen subfamily of S1 peptidases but lacks detectable protease activity. Alternative splicing generates multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms.
