Target Information
Voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC) proteins are abundant, pore-forming proteins belonging to the eukaryotic mitochondrial porins. They are located primarily in the mitochondrial outer membrane and also expressed in the plasma membrane.
At least three different VDAC genes have been identified in vertebrates. VDAC proteins play an essential role in cellular metabolism and the early stages of apoptosis.
VDAC constitutes a major pathway for metabolite exchange (e.g., ADP/ATP, succinate, citrate) between the cytosol and mitochondria. VDAC1 in the plasma membrane may also regulate apoptosis via its redox activity.
