Target Information
CD44 cell surface antigen is a 100 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein widely expressed on human leukocytes, brain white matter, and some epithelial cells of the intestine and breast. Several isoforms exist, including the predominant CD44H isoform found in many normal tissues. CD44 acts as a receptor for hyaluronic acid (HA) and participates in cell-cell interactions, adhesion, and migration.
CD44 is involved in various cellular functions such as lymphocyte activation, recirculation, and homing. Its expression can be upregulated in certain carcinomas, potentially linked to metastatic potential. CD44 is expressed in hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells, epithelial tissues, and filopodia of cultured keratinocytes. Bone marrow myeloid cells and memory T cells show high CD44 expression, and peripheral B and T cells can upregulate CD44 upon stimulation.
Alternative splicing of the CD44 gene produces multiple isoforms with distinct functions. Dysfunction of CD44 has been associated with diseases such as superficial keratitis and lichen sclerosus, and it may play a role in tumor metastasis.
