Target Information

CD44 cell surface antigen is a 100 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein widely expressed on human leukocytes, white matter of the brain, and certain epithelial cells of the intestine and breast. Several isoforms exist, with the predominant CD44H isoform detected in many normal tissues.
CD44 acts as a receptor for hyaluronic acid (HA) and plays roles in cell-cell interactions, adhesion, and migration. It is involved in lymphocyte activation, recirculation, and homing. Expression may increase in some carcinomas and may relate to metastatic potential.
CD44 is expressed in hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells, epithelial tissues, and filopodia in cultured keratinocytes. Bone marrow myeloid cells and memory T cells express high levels, while peripheral B and T cells can upregulate CD44 upon stimulation.
Alternative splicing generates multiple isoforms, contributing to structural and functional diversity. Dysfunctions in CD44 are associated with diseases such as superficial keratitis and lichen sclerosus, and may be linked to tumor metastasis formation.
