Target Information
Transthyretin (TTR), also known as prealbumin, is a plasma protein that functions as a transporter of the hormone thyroxine and retinal-binding protein. It is primarily produced in the liver and secreted into plasma. TTR constitutes about 25% of CSF protein, suggesting selective transport across the blood-CSF barrier or de novo synthesis within the central nervous system. Transthyretin is found in neuritic plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, and microangiopathic lesions of senile cerebral amyloid. More than 40 mutations in the TTR gene have been associated with amyloid deposition.
