Target Information
The CD4 antigen is involved in the recognition of MHC class II molecules and acts as a co-receptor for HIV. CD4 is primarily expressed in T helper cells but can also be found in monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. Tissue-level expression includes thymus, lymph nodes, tonsils, spleen, and certain regions of the brain and gut. CD4 contributes to T-cell activation through association with the T-cell receptor complex and protein tyrosine kinase Lck, and may mediate neuronal damage in infectious and immune-mediated CNS diseases. Multiple alternatively spliced transcripts have been identified in this gene (RefSeq, July 2017).
