Target Information
Cluster of differentiation 8 (CD8) is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin family that plays a key role in signal transduction, T cell differentiation, and activation. CD8 is mainly expressed on T cells as a disulfide-linked heterodimer of CD8α and CD8β, functioning as a co-receptor with T cell receptor (TCR) for MHC class I molecules. CD8α also forms homodimers on subsets of T cells, NK cells, monocytes, and dendritic cells. Binding of MHC-I/peptide complexes by antigen-presenting cells triggers Lck recruitment, leading to lymphokine production, motility, and cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) activation. Activated CTLs are essential for pathogen and tumor cell clearance. Differentiation of naive CD8+ T cells into CTLs is enhanced by IL-2, IL-12, and TGF-β1.
