Target Information

DNA-binding protein SATB2 binds to DNA at nuclear matrix- or scaffold-associated regions.
It recognizes the sugar-phosphate structure of double-stranded DNA and acts as a transcription factor controlling nuclear gene expression by binding to matrix attachment regions (MARs) of DNA and inducing chromatin-loop remodeling.
SATB2 serves as a docking site for chromatin remodeling enzymes, recruiting corepressors (HDACs) or coactivators (HATs) directly to promoters and enhancers.
It is essential for the initiation of upper-layer neurons (UL1) specific genetic programs and the repression of deep-layer neurons (DL) and UL2 specific genes, likely through modulation of BCL11B expression.
SATB2 functions as a repressor of Ctip2 and a regulatory determinant of corticocortical connections in the developing cerebral cortex.
Mutations in the SATB2 gene are associated with cleft palate isolated (CPI).
