Target Information
The protein encoded by the SERPINC1 gene is a plasma protease inhibitor and a member of the serpin superfamily. It inhibits thrombin and other activated serine proteases involved in the coagulation cascade, thereby regulating blood clotting. The protein has two functional domains:
- Heparin-binding domain at the N-terminus
- Reactive site domain at the C-terminus
Its inhibitory activity is enhanced in the presence of heparin. Over 120 mutations have been identified in this gene, many associated with antithrombin-III deficiency.
