Target Information
Cells respond to environmental stress by increasing the expression of heat shock proteins (HSPs). Among them, small heat shock proteins (15–30 kDa) play key roles in stress response and have been linked to neoplasia. Hsp27, a well-studied member, shows rapid phosphorylation upon exposure to mitogens and tumor promoters. Its expression correlates with steroid hormone receptors and is elevated in breast carcinoma and endometrial adenocarcinomas. Regulation of human Hsp27 by estrogens and heat shock resembles the ecdysteroid and heat shock activation of Drosophila Hsp20 genes.
