This antibody detects SARS-CoV-2 Spike protein, but does not cross-react with SARS-CoV or MERS-CoV spike proteins based on internal testing.
Target Information
SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2), also known as 2019-nCoV (2019 Novel Coronavirus), causes illnesses ranging from mild cold-like symptoms to severe respiratory distress and death.
The SARS-CoV-2 Spike Protein consists of S1 and S2 domains. It is the main surface antigen of the virus. The glycosylated Spike protein can be detected in infected cell culture supernatants using antisera from SARS patients.
The S1 domain contains a receptor-binding domain (RBD) that specifically binds to angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), the receptor on target cells. CoV diversity is reflected in variations of Spike proteins, which differ in receptor interactions and responses to environmental triggers of virus-cell membrane fusion.
