Target Information
PHAS-II (eIF4E-binding protein II) is involved in translation initiation and is highly expressed in liver and kidney. PHAS proteins bind to eIF-4E, the mRNA cap-binding protein, inhibiting translation of capped mRNA in vitro and in cells. Phosphorylation at specific sites promotes dissociation of PHAS/eIF-4E complexes, allowing eIF-4E to bind eIF-4G (p220) and increase translation initiation. The mTOR/p70S6K pathway regulates PHAS-I and PHAS-II, suggesting PHAS proteins mediate effects on protein synthesis and cell proliferation.
