ALKBH5 is a dioxygenase that demethylates RNA through oxidative demethylation, specifically targeting N(6)-methyladenosine (m6A), the most common internal modification in eukaryotic mRNA. This process influences mRNA processing and export. ALKBH5 can also demethylate N(6)-methyladenosine in single-stranded DNA (in vitro) and requires molecular oxygen, alpha-ketoglutarate, and iron for activity.
