Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells found in both keratinizing (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing tissues (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs are identified, classified into:
- Type I: acidic polypeptides
- Type II: basic polypeptides
Keratin 14, a type I low molecular weight keratin, pairs with keratin 5 and helps distinguish stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells. It is useful for identifying squamous cell carcinomas and is considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas. Both acidic and basic CK family members are expressed in all epithelial cells.
