Target Information
Cytokeratins are a subfamily of intermediate filament proteins characterized by biochemical diversity, represented in human epithelial tissues by at least 20 different polypeptides. They range in molecular weight between approximately 40 kDa and 68 kDa, with isoelectric points between 4.9 and 7.8.
Individual human cytokeratins are numbered 1 to 20. Expression patterns of cytokeratin subtypes are characteristic of specific epithelial types and their degree of differentiation. These patterns are valuable in distinguishing different epithelial malignancies.
Cytokeratin antibodies are useful tools in:
- Differential diagnosis of tumors using immunohistochemistry
- Cytopathology
- Flow cytometric assays
