Target Information

The MFN2 gene encodes a mitochondrial membrane protein involved in mitochondrial fusion and maintenance of the mitochondrial network. It regulates vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation and may play a role in obesity pathophysiology.
Mutations in MFN2 cause Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2A2 and hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy VI, both affecting the peripheral nervous system. Defects have also been linked to early-onset stroke. Two transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
