Target Information
p21-Activated Protein Kinases (PAKs) include several isoforms in mammals:
- PAK1 (alpha-PAK) and PAK3 (beta-PAK): primarily brain-specific
- PAK2 (gamma-PAK): ubiquitously expressed
Mutations in the PAK3 gene are linked to X-linked mental retardation. PAK3 regulates synapse formation and plasticity in the hippocampus and plays a key role in controlling cell shape, motility, and apoptosis. Autophosphorylation of Thr402 is essential for PAK activation.
