Target Information
Spectrin (Sp), the most abundant erythrocyte membrane skeleton protein, maintains the biconcave shape and flexibility of red blood cells. It consists of a 280 kDa alpha subunit and a 246 kDa beta subunit forming a 100 nm rod-like structure. Spectrin in non-erythroid tissues may contain homologous alpha and beta subunits (fodrin). The nomenclature designates erythrocyte subunits as alpha-1 and beta-1, and fodrin subunits as alpha-2 and beta-2. Alternatively spliced forms are labeled epsilon-1, epsilon-2, etc. (e.g., beta-1 epsilon-1).
