Beta amyloid is a 40–43 amino acid peptide cleaved from amyloid precursor protein by gamma-secretase. Beta Amyloid (1–40) (Amyloid beta 40 or Abeta 40) together with Beta Amyloid (1–42) (Amyloid beta 42 or Abeta 42) are two major C-terminal variants of the amyloid beta protein, constituting the majority of amyloid beta proteins. Both alloforms are major components of the extracellular plaques found in Alzheimer’s disease brain tissue.
