Target Information
Leptin is a 167 amino acid protein hormone (~16 kDa) encoded by the ob (obese) gene. It plays a key role in regulating body weight, metabolism, and reproductive function. Leptin is primarily secreted by adipocytes, with smaller amounts produced by stomach epithelial cells and the placenta.
Leptin receptors are abundant in the hypothalamus, T lymphocytes, and vascular endothelial cells, influencing feeding behavior, energy expenditure, and body temperature.
Leptin also contributes to hematopoiesis, angiogenesis, wound healing, inflammation, immune responses, pubertal development, and fetal growth.
Defects in leptin production can lead to severe hereditary obesity in both rodents and humans.
