Target Information

Leptin is a 167 amino acid long protein hormone involved in regulating body weight, metabolism, and reproductive function.
It is approximately 16 kDa in mass and encoded by the obese (ob) gene.
Leptin is mainly expressed by adipocytes, but also secreted by stomach epithelial cells and the placenta.
Leptin receptors are highly expressed in hypothalamic regions that regulate body weight, as well as in T lymphocytes and vascular endothelial cells.
Leptin influences energy expenditure, feeding behavior, thermogenesis, wound healing, inflammation, and immune responses.
Defects in leptin production can lead to severe hereditary obesity in rodents and humans.
