HPV E7 단백질은 작은(HPV16 E7의 경우 98 아미노산, 약 15 kDa) 아연 결합 인산화 단백질로, 핵 내에 위치합니다. 이 단백질은 아데노바이러스 C 아속의 E1A 단백질과 구조적, 기능적으로 유사합니다.
HPV16 E7의 N-말단 16개 아미노산은 E1A 단백질의 보존 영역 1(CR1)과 유사하며, 37번째 아미노산까지의 영역은 보존 영역 2(CR2) 전체와 상동성을 가집니다. 이러한 영역들은 세포 변형에 필수적인 것으로 알려져 있으며, CR2 영역에는 종양 억제 단백질 pRb와 결합하는 LXCXE 모티프(22–26번째 잔기)가 포함되어 있습니다.
