Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a plasma protease inhibitor and a member of the serpin superfamily. It inhibits thrombin and other activated serine proteases in the coagulation system, regulating the blood coagulation cascade. The protein contains two functional domains: a heparin-binding domain at the N-terminus and a reactive site domain at the C-terminus. Its inhibitory activity is enhanced by heparin. More than 120 mutations have been identified, many causing antithrombin-III deficiency.
