Target Information

Calnexin (also known as IP90, p88, p90) is an ~90 kDa integral membrane protein of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER).
It acts as a molecular chaperone involved in proper folding and assembly of polypeptides.
Calnexin associates with MHC class I heavy chains, partial complexes of T cell receptor and B cell membrane immunoglobulin, but not with completed receptor complexes.
It retains incompletely folded proteins in the ER.
Unlike soluble ER proteins with a KDEL sequence, calnexin lacks this motif but contains positively charged cytosolic residues for ER retention.
Calnexin structure: large ER luminal domain (461 amino acids), transmembrane segment (22 amino acids), and cytoplasmic tail (89 amino acids).
