Target Information
Calnexin (also known as IP90, p88, p90) is an approximately 90 kDa integral membrane protein of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). It functions as a molecular chaperone, aiding in the folding and assembly of polypeptides into multisubunit proteins. Calnexin associates with MHC class I heavy chains, partial complexes of the T cell receptor, and B cell membrane immunoglobulin, but not with completed receptor complexes. It retains incompletely folded proteins in the ER.
Soluble ER proteins such as GRP78, GRP94, and protein disulfide isomerase contain the KDEL sequence for ER retention, whereas integral ER proteins like calnexin rely on positively charged cytosolic residues for retention. Calnexin consists of a large ER luminal domain (461 amino acids), a transmembrane segment (22 amino acids), and a cytoplasmic tail (89 amino acids).
