Target Information
Immunity-related GTPases (IRG), also known as p47 GTPases, are a family of GTPase proteins found in vertebrates that play critical roles in innate resistance to intracellular pathogens.
IRG genes exist in various species including mice, rats, zebrafish, and humans.
Most mouse genes contain interferon-stimulated response elements mediating transcriptional activation by IFNs.
In humans, two IRG genes have been identified:
- IRGC encodes a full-length IRG protein constitutively expressed in testis.
- IRGM encodes a truncated protein expressed in cultured cells, including macrophage cell lines.
As human IRGC and IRGM are not IFN-controlled, the IRG-mediated host resistance seen in mice may be absent in humans.
