Target Information
Metallothionein family proteins are low molecular weight, cysteine-rich, and bind divalent heavy metal ions through mercaptide linkages.
They act as antioxidants, protect against hydroxyl free radicals, and regulate metal homeostasis and detoxification.
Disruption of metallothionein genes in mice leads to defects in heavy metal protection, oxidative stress response, immune reactions, and carcinogenesis, and may cause obesity.
MT1A (Metallothionein 1A) is a protein-coding gene associated with Menkes Disease and Deficiency Anemia.
