Target Information
Caveolae are specialized domains of the plasma membrane involved in sequestering various lipid and protein molecules. These organelles play key roles in lipid metabolism, growth regulation, signal transduction, and apoptosis. Caveolin interacts with and regulates heterotrimeric G-proteins.
There are three known members of the caveolin multigene family encoding 21–24 kDa integral membrane proteins that form the major structural components of caveolae in vivo.
Caveolin-2 protein is abundantly expressed in fibroblasts, adipocytes, smooth and skeletal muscle, and endothelial cells. Caveolin-1 shows a similar expression pattern, while Caveolin-3 is mainly expressed in muscle tissues.
