Product Specific Information

0.5 µg/mL was sufficient for detection of 100 ng purified alphaA crystalline by colorimetric immunoblot analysis using Goat Anti-Mouse IgG:HRP as the secondary.
Detects approximately 20 kDa. Does not cross-react with alpha B-crystallin, beta L-crystallin, beta H-crystallin, gamma-crystallin, HSP25, HSP27, or HSP47 proteins.

Target Information

Lens proteins consist almost entirely of crystallins (about 95%). Crystallins are also found in vertebrate skeletal muscle tissue. In the lens, their structural function is to maintain the proper refractive index.
The mammalian lens contains three major classes of crystallins: alpha, beta, and gamma. Alpha-crystallin is the largest and composed of two primary gene products—alpha-A and alpha-B.
Alpha-crystallin functions as a molecular chaperone, preventing protein aggregation and possibly reducing cataract formation. Phosphorylated states of alpha-crystallin may occur in response to cellular stress, playing a role in protein maintenance.
Alpha-B crystallin has been linked to Alexander’s disease, where it accumulates in brain cells.
