The protein encoded by this gene is an enzymatic component of the tricarboxylic acid cycle (Krebs cycle) and catalyzes the formation of L-malate from fumarate. It exists in both cytosolic and mitochondrial forms, differing by translation start site. The mitochondrial form is generated by removal of an N-terminal extension. This enzyme functions as a homotetramer and is similar to thermostable class II fumarases. Mutations in this gene can cause fumarase deficiency, leading to progressive encephalopathy.
