Target Information
The HSPD1 gene encodes a mitochondrial chaperonin protein that assists in folding and assembly of newly imported proteins.
It may also act as a signaling molecule in the innate immune system.
This gene is located adjacent to a related family member, sharing a bidirectional promoter region.
Several pseudogenes are associated, and two transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
Mutations in this gene cause autosomal recessive spastic paraplegia 13.
