Target Information
This gene encodes a protein that belongs to the cysteine-aspartic acid protease (caspase) family. Sequential activation of caspases is crucial for the execution phase of apoptosis. Caspases are synthesized as inactive proenzymes and are processed at conserved aspartic residues to produce large and small subunits that dimerize to form the active enzyme. Caspase-7 is cleaved by caspase-3 and -10, activated upon cell death stimuli, and induces apoptosis. Alternative splicing results in four transcript variants encoding three distinct isoforms.
