FGF4는 강력한 종양 형성 활성과 혈관 형성 촉진 효과를 가지며, 성체 마우스의 고혈관화 조직(정소, 장, 뇌 등)에서도 발현됩니다. 또한 골형성 및 사지 발달에서 Sonic Hedgehog (SHH) 신호 경로를 통해 작용하며, 신경 전구세포의 증식과 분화 조절에도 관여합니다. 최근 연구에서는 인간 배아줄기세포에서 성장 촉진 역할과 분화 단계에서 피드백 억제 메커니즘을 수행하는 FGF4 스플라이스 이소폼이 보고되었습니다.
