Target Information
Fibroblast growth factor 4 (FGF4) is a member of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family with broad mitogenic and cell survival activities. It plays key roles in growth and survival of stem cells during embryogenesis, tissue regeneration, and carcinogenesis.
FGF4 exhibits strong oncogenic transforming activity and acts as a potent angiogenic factor, expressed in several highly vascularized tumors and adult mouse tissues such as testis, intestine, and brain.
Studies suggest its involvement in bone morphogenesis and limb development via the sonic hedgehog (SHH) signaling pathway. Additionally, FGF4 regulates neural progenitor cell proliferation and neuronal differentiation.
Recent findings indicate a growth-promoting role in human embryonic stem cells and a feedback inhibition mechanism through a novel FGF4 splice isoform that may promote differentiation at later developmental stages.
